CEJ to host Pakistan's first data bootcamp event from May 7 to 9, 2015
The CEJ is set to host Pakistan's first data journalism event in the month of May from 7th to 9th at the IBA City Campus, Karachi. The 3-day FREE data bootcamp, d|Bootcamp Karachi, aims to explore and access government and civic data and the ways this information can be presented to the public in order to increase awareness of these important topics. CEJ is offering this important workshop in conjunction with Hack/Hackers Pakistan and the ICFK Knight Foundation.
d|Bootcamp has invited journalists, coders/designers/developers, and civic activists to attend the training session, which will be conducted jointly by international and local trainers.
Trainers from Code for Africa, International Centre for Journalists' Knight program, and the Technology for People Initiative at LUMS will collaborate with aspiring Pakistani data journalists working in tandem with technologists and digital designers on team projects. The training will emphasize hands-on learning and personal consultations with the trainers and several prominent Pakistani mentors.
This data bootcamp is designed to make sense of large government datasets and turning complex information into useful tools for citizens. It will teach the participants to work together in multidisciplinary teams, pooling together their skillsets to produce data driven stories, maps, visualization and run civic engagement campaigns that can improve citizens' access to information and services.
Participants at the bootcamp will learn how to access and use the data for their own projects, and will meet like-minded people from the media, civil society and technology spaces who are interested in cross-sector collaboration.
Though based in Karachi, CEJ is committed to reaching the broader Pakistani media community. To that end, the Centre has offered a limited number of sponsorships for applicants traveling from outside the city, which will cover travelling and accommodation cost.
The application process concluded on Sunday, April 12th. The d|Bootcamp has created a lot of excitement in the media and technology circles, with hundreds of applications received for the limited number of training slots.
