'Lab Azad' Excellence in Journalism Award 2017
CEJ hosted a five-day Citizen Journalism Program from May 8 -12 in Karachi that brought together 40 Pakistan U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN) alumni. All of the alumni were young professionals representing all 12 national chapters of PUAN.
The trainers who conducted various sessions during the event included: former Bloomberg bureau chief of Pakistan Naween Mangi, CEJ Director Kamal Siddiqi, former features head at The Express Tribune Farahnaz Zahidi, filmmaker Sabin Agha, photographer and instructor Farah Kamal, Geo TV Digital Head Ovais Jafar, BoloBhi director Farieha Aziz, Morango Films Founder and Creative Director Abrar ul Hassan, Herald editor Badar Alam, business editor of The Express Tribune Bilal Ahmed, Girls at Dhaba's Sadia Khatri, former podcaster Dr. Awab Alvi, Advocate Zahid Ebrahim, and media trainer Sadaf Khan.
Sessions included introduction to podcasting, practical photojournalism (utilizing smartphones for photojournalists), legal issues for journalists, ethics in journalism and sourcing, introduction to multimedia, and citizen journalism as social activism. While individual sessions were taught by subject experts, while the entire week was guided by a master trainer, senior journalist Afia Salam.
A panel discussion on the future of media in Pakistan included Wusatullah Khan, Shayan Naveed and Gibran Peshimam. The panel was moderated by Afia Salam.
