A Decade of Excellence: CEJ Marks 10 Years of Impact in Journalism | August 2025

The Center for Excellence in Journalism at IBA Karachi marked a significant milestone by celebrating ten years of impact and contribution to journalism in Pakistan.

The landmark event opened with remarks from Scott Urbom, U.S. Consul General in Karachi, who highlighted the importance of strong, independent media and the role institutions like CEJ play in strengthening journalism and supporting professional development in the field.

The gathering brought together journalists, media professionals, academics, and students to reflect on the evolving media landscape and the role of journalism in an increasingly complex information environment. The programme featured a series of thought-provoking panel discussions addressing some of the most pressing issues facing the industry today.

One panel explored the growing influence of artificial intelligence in Pakistani newsrooms and how emerging technologies are reshaping reporting, content production, and newsroom

workflows. Another discussion focused on the challenges journalists face in navigating censorship, threats, and risks while continuing to uphold the principles of independent reporting. The event also included a dedicated session on misinformation and fact checking, highlighting the importance of verification and responsible reporting in the digital age.

The celebration concluded with a vote of thanks by Shahzeb Jillani, Director of CEJ, who reflected on the Center’s journey over the past decade and its continued commitment to strengthening journalistic standards and supporting media professionals across the country.

As CEJ marked this milestone, the event served both as a moment of reflection and as a renewed commitment to fostering excellence, innovation, and integrity in journalism nationwide.
